With top flight team and previous year winners and race record holders Team Hell missing from the 2016 lineup after retiring from the sport in late 2015, the 2016 Southern 80 crown was anyone’s. Wearing the #1 on Sunday afternoon, the local Echuca team of The Mistress didn’t let the new skier placement rules slow them down by greeting the judges in the blistering time of 30:23.60. Congratulations to Leo Welch and the team. Galleries for the weekend are now online – click here.
The 50th edition of the largest ski race on the planet run on the first weekend of February 2015 will be remembered for the amazing result team Hell achieved – the Superclass crew of Hellrazor became the first boat to claim victory with a winning time breaking the 30 minute barrier, and with an amazing average speed of over 100mph!!!! So I have decided to take a look back to where it started – taking shots at the Southern 80 in the 90s with my 35mm SLR. I dug through my old albums to find the shots that were ok, then went through negative after negative to gather a small collection of some of the former great boats of the sport. While I think my skills and equipment have improved since the late 90s, I think there are still a few decent pictures, hope you enjoy. Click here to head to the gallery.
After spending hours and hours trolling through my library of images, I have selected what I think is the cream of my crop and now taking plunge by publishing them here for everyone to see. The Formula One circus touched down in Albert Park Melbourne March 13-16 for the opening round of the 2014 season. The new regulations may have softened that unmistakeable F1 sound, but they still make an impressive sight on the lakeside street circuit, check out pics from the event here.
The weekend of March 22nd – 23rd saw Geelong host ski racing action with the SRV Grand Prix #2 and #3. Raced on a course over Corio Bay with Geelong making a scenic back drop, the race teams were greeted with blustery overcast conditions which do not stop them from putting on close exciting racing for the spectators gathered.
